NVIDIA’s latest small-model updates: what matters for a local AI machine
October 2026 Nemotron releases bring new local-model options. Here is what to test before choosing a private AI machine.
NVIDIA’s October releases add compact models to the local-AI shortlist. The useful buying question is whether a candidate runs your task accurately, within the memory and response-time limits of your machine.
What NVIDIA released
On 15 October 2026, NVIDIA announced Nemotron 3.5 Super VL and Bolt 74B-A9B 24GB. Its research team subsequently published Bolt E4B 4GB on 23 October, aimed at conversational agents on local NVIDIA platforms.

Why the smaller release is relevant
NVIDIA describes Bolt E4B as supporting tool use, a conversational mode and configurable reasoning, with a target footprint of around 4 GB in its intended workloads. That is a vendor description, not a measured result on an SLM Pros machine. Context, runtime and the other applications on the system still need room.
Start with a task you can score
For a conversational assistant, test whether it answers briefly, keeps track of the request and calls the right approved tool. For document work, test source accuracy and missing information. Run the same examples against your existing model. A release is useful when it improves the result you need, not simply because it is newer.
Keep the whole workflow in the test
Voice assistants also need speech recognition, audio output and application logic. Document assistants need parsing and retrieval. Measure the end-to-end delay and memory use with those components active. A fast response from the language model alone does not prove the full workflow is responsive.
What this means when ordering a machine
Treat these releases as candidates for evaluation, rather than fixed inclusions in a hardware tier. Confirm model licensing, supported software and the exact workload before agreeing a configuration. SLM Pros can scope model selection, local setup and subsequent re-testing as part of a project. New order fulfilment starts in 2027.
Does a 4 GB model mean a 4 GB machine is enough?
No. The model is one part of the workload. Budget additional memory for context, the runtime, document tools, the operating system and other active applications.
