Buying an SLM machine: what hardware, setup and ongoing services should cover
A practical breakdown of the machine, model setup, local document search, API integration, maintenance and support.
An SLM machine supplies computing capacity. A usable business system also needs selected software, a tested workflow, access rules and someone responsible for maintenance. Get each part of that scope written into the quote.
The machine
Specify GPU or unified memory, system RAM, storage, connectivity and the physical installation. Check power, noise and cooling requirements. Keep the proposed configuration separate from the final bill of materials. The right question is whether the agreed workload fits and performs well, rather than whether every component has the highest specification.
Model selection and setup
Select a model and runtime that support the task and hardware. Check licensing, languages and the exact compressed model version. NVIDIA’s local-AI guide presents several hardware routes rather than a single universal configuration. Ask for a repeatable setup and documented settings so the installation can be reproduced.
Documents and application connections
Document search needs parsing, embeddings, an index, permissions and source links. An API connection needs input validation and a defined output format. Keep those separate from basic hardware supply. Confirm which document types and application actions are included before treating a demonstration as a finished integration.
Maintenance and updates
Agree who reviews new models, runtime patches and document-index changes. Retain a known working version and a rollback procedure. Decide how updates reach an offline installation. Test the workflow again after changes rather than assuming that a newer model preserves the behaviour people rely on.
Support that matches your team
Set out support hours, communication channels, response targets and what requires a new quote. Identify who owns backups and recovery. An ongoing SLM service can cover model and software upkeep while inference remains on your machine; the support arrangement must state whether any remote access or data transfer is permitted.
How SLM Pros packages the work
Our machines page shows Core, Advanced and Custom starting configurations. Software and support are quoted separately for the project. Tell us the task, users and processing boundary; we can scope setup, maintenance or ongoing service around that brief. Orders enter our waiting list, and fulfilment starts in 2027.
Does ongoing support mean my data runs in the cloud?
Not inherently. The support contract and architecture determine the data path. Specify local inference and the permitted support access, then verify the configured system against that requirement.
